From deep, deep within Seattle's ROCK underground
Artists Videos Little Mark E-Mail
It must have been sometime in 1990 that I answered an add to play drums for a band called FREAK SCENE. I drove 40 miles from my house in Bonney Lake to Seattle and found the big red warehouse. Although later I did join that band I'll never forget my reaction to their practice space. It was the corner of a 5000 square foot loft of junk and props, bicycles and drafting tables. Plastic particians and photographs, posters and porn. Everything seemed to be hanging from the ceiling. The coffee pot was on and the smell of fresh coffee and drying oil paint was something rocknroll dreams are made of. The rest is history. With the help of some very cool friends, what was already an artist's workshop with a name and a character, was divided into 10 sections. We built the walls out of new wood and recycled materials. The walls were built thick. Then I started renting rooms. At first there were a few eccentric artists of different mediums occupying spaces but eventually it was all bands. Studio A today retains some of that psycho, art-o, struggling artist, anti-normal rocknroll persona. A must-see destination if you know the right people.Updated Oct '05
